The Friend Zone

Angry woman rejects her boyfriend isolated on white

So there’s this guy you’ve been hanging out with for a while. You can tell he’s into you but you’re just not feeling it. You don’t want to stop hanging out with him completely, though, so there’s only one thing to do: put him in the dreaded friend zone. Recently, this term has become the bane of many men’s existences. If done tactfully, however, you may just be able to salvage the friendship with minimal bitterness.

Stop Hanging Out Alone

At least at first. Invite him to hang out in group situations with plenty of your friends to serve as buffers. This way, he will be less likely to confuse this as a date. If he asks to see you alone, suggest that you invite other people to join you…and don’t take no for an answer.

Don’t Let Him Pay for You

As tempting as it might be to your wallet, insist on paying for your own meals, movie tickets or bowling shoes. Paying for you is what you expect from your boyfriend. You wouldn’t let your girlfriend shell out money for your expenses, so you shouldn’t let your friend zoned guy either.

Be Wary of Nighttime Hours

If How I Met Your Mother has taught us anything, it’s that nothing good happens after 2 am. If you’ve had a rough night out at the bars and need a friend, don’t go see this guy. He will read into it and think it’s a booty call. It’s not fair to lead him on like that. Just go to bed.

Be Honest

If you’re doing all of these things and he’s still not getting the hint, honesty is the best policy. Tell him that you don’t want to lose his friendship but you’re not interested in him romantically. Expect him to be a little upset at first; he’ll feel like he’s been wasting his time. Give him some time and if he’s as good of a person as you think he is, he’ll come around.
