Date Night Movie Review: Like Crazy

Like Crazy (2011) is a roller coaster love story that feels all too real. Anna (Felicity Jones) is a foreign exchange college student from England who falls in love with L.A. Furniture designer, Jacob (Anton Yelchin). The film follows their relationship as internal and external forces pull upon the strong bond they develop over a summer of romance.

Like Crazy is packed with an attractive and talented cast, features very likable characters that are easy to empathize with, and follows a plot that will have you invested in the young heroes’ plights. The story line is refreshing in that the plot doesn’t feel contrived or exaggerated. The twists and turns the couple experiences feel as though they could be a portrayal of actual events of a real romance. Any viewer who has had a long distance relationship may easily relate with the young lovers. Fair warning; don’t be surprised if you experience a “close to home” sensation by the time the final song plays.

If a romantic, cuddly, night-in with popcorn and a movie is your objective you’ll probably do better than play Like Crazy. Not that Like Crazy is a film of poor quality; it’s remarkably profound, contrarily. However, your hearts are more likely to be faltering than fluttering. On the other hand, if you want to signal to your significant other that your relationship needs immediate attention then stream this film and have a box of tissues nearby.

Attractive and likable cast, strong realistic plot, but definitely a heart-wrencher. 3 out of 5 stars.
