Flirting 101: Tips to Get You Started

So you’re out with your friends and a guy or girl across the room catches your eye. What do you do? Do you just sit there and hope they initiate something or do you put together some of your favorite flirting techniques to get their attention?  If you just sit there, maybe you’re nervous or you’re just not the type of person to make the first move. Not to worry, there are many people out there who hate making the first move. However, if you want to switch things up, here are a few Flirting 101 tips for how to get your game up and running.

It’s All About the Eye Contact

If you’re interested in someone, make a little eye contact to start things off. Don’t be a creep about it and stare your target down, but every now and then, glance their way. If they look back and smile, you’re making progress. It also could mean they are just being nice, but it’s definitely worth a shot. If you’re getting positive vibes, take it to the next step and try to start a conversation. What’s the worst that can happen?

Show You’re Interested

So either you or this new person made the first move to initiate conversation. Now what do you do? Try to be genuine and get to know your new friend. Ask questions and give honest answers when you get asked questions in return. Now is not the time to start lying about yourself or your history; just be yourself! This is the time when you are figuring out whether you two could be a good match. Don’t sit on your phone or consistently make eye contact with your friends in the other corner (unless you need a getaway plan!).

Body Language is Huge

One of the easiest ways to scare someone off is by sitting with your arms crossed. Some people do that subconsciously, but onlookers might see that as you being unapproachable.  On the other hand, pointing your feet towards the person you’re talking to is a good way to show you’re interested. With your body completely facing this other person, you reinforce that you’re 100% focused on them.

Don’t Play Games or Be Rude

Nobody has time to waste on a person who’s obviously playing games. If you’re interested, don’t play hard to get because it could easily backfire on you. Also, try to limit your sarcasm or humor if it can come across as disrespectful. Some playful humor is definitely a good thing, but if it crosses into embarrassing or potentially offensive, put a lid on it. You don’t want to be perceived as a mean person, so keep everything lighthearted and fun.

Don’t be Clingy

Don’t be a Stage 5 Clinger and creep hard on this new person. If it seems like they are trying to get away or actually need to leave, let them leave. If you exchanged numbers, then be happy with how tonight went and look forward to your next encounter. If you want, send a playful text if you don’t hear anything in a day or two. However, if they ignore your texts or calls, cut your losses and move onto using your flirting techniques on your next new potential love interest.

Flirting isn’t an exact science, so there are a number of things you can do to attract someone and keep their attention. The important thing is to be yourself and have fun. Not every attempt at flirting is going to go as planned, but you live and you learn.
