“I have confidence in confidence alone, besides which you’ll see, I have confidence in me!” Julie Andrews famously sang these words in The Sound of Music, but outside the confines of a musical, having confidence is easier said than done. When that niggling sense of self-doubt creeps in, there are a handful of facts that should give you some perspective.

It is Attractive

Ask anyone what the most attractive quality in a prospective partner is and the answer is almost universal. It’s not a sense of humor or your love for rescuing dogs (as wonderful as those are), it’s confidence.

You have a slew of friends and family who love you as you are and whom you don’t get insecure around. What’s the difference between them and a guy? Trust your instincts—you know yourself. Don’t let that get lost in the shuffle because you want to jump his bones.

When you’re out and about and you notice someone noticing you, maybe the first thing they see is your eyes or your ass. Men respond to the way you carry yourself. If you can’t look him in the eye or form a coherent sentence, the ass becomes irrelevant. Use that wit and charm to your advantage—appearance goes well beyond how you look.

Don’t act like something or someone you’re not. It’s the quickest way for you to feel uncomfortable in your own skin and the best way to kill a relationship before it even starts. Do, say, and wear what gives you confidence. Others will notice it and, more importantly, you’ll feel it.

Be Independent

If you hate your job, your city, or your life in general, it’s not going to be conducive to having a healthy relationship with anyone else. At best, you’ll be horribly codependent; at worst, you’ll be Boo Radley. However, if you are happy and confident professionally and personally, you’ve given yourself a much stronger jump off point to romantic happiness. The best relationship you can build is the one with yourself. Have confidence in that, and the rest will fall into place.
