How To Tell If a Girl Likes You

Soft flirt between attractive couple

Determining if a woman likes you can be confusing. We’re sometimes friendly, sometimes flirty—I get it. We want friendship with some of you and a relationship with others, but some of us don’t know how to act in a way that clarifies our intentions. I apologize for myself and on the behalf of the other women who unknowingly give men these frustrating mixed signals.

I wish I could give you some clear-cut signals all women give when they’re interested, but the signals vary because women vary. Some women are outgoing and forward while others are more reserved or wait for the guy to make the first move. In general terms, here’s a breakdown of female behavior so that you can figure out how to tell if a girl likes you:

A Bold, 21st Century Woman

This type of woman knows what she wants and isn’t afraid to put her neck on the line to get it. She believes women can do whatever they want as long as they put their minds to it; so when she likes you, she will let you know. It’s probable that she might:

  1. Give you some intense eye contact
  2. Walk up and start a conversation with you
  3. Flirt with you
  4. Give you her number—whether or not you ask for it
  5. Call/text you first
  6. Ask you out
  7. Make the first move

If she sees you as a friend, it’s probable that she might:

  1. Laugh and joke around with you
  2. Give you hugs, high-fives, slaps, etc.
  3. Be comfortable telling you her life dramas
  4. Call and text you freely
  5. Not ask you out
  6. Not make a physical first move
  7. Not give you “the look”
  8. Talk to you about her love life/the men in her life

A Reserved  and “Old-Fashioned” Woman

This lady may be just as confident as 21st Century Woman, but she has different views about the roles of men and women in a relationship. She believes men should make all of the first moves at the beginning of a relationship. She likes to be courted. Therefore, if she likes you, it’s probable that she might:

  1. Not approach you (even if she’s interested)
  2. Steal some glances of you while you’re not looking, but won’t give much, if any, eye contact
  3. Talk to her friends while smiling in your direction
  4. Have her friends pushing her to talk to you
  5. Not ask for your number or give you hers without you asking
  6. Not ask you out
  7. Not text/call you first

If she ends up talking to you, or if you are already friends, she’ll likely flirt, laugh and smile a lot. But she won’t make the first move.

On the other hand, if she thinks that you have more potential as a friend, it’s probably that she might:

  1. Be comfortable talking with you about most things, including the men in her life
  2. Laugh and joke around with you (which might be mistaken for flirtation, but is really just her feeling comfortable around you)
  3. Be fine texting/calling you whenever
  4. Invite you out to lunch, dinner, etc.
  5. Not be shy around you
  6. Not give you “those looks”

Even though women approach dating and relationships differently, if they like you, they will all say yes when you ask them out. This is how to truly tell if any woman is interested in getting to know you better or in taking your relationship out of the friend zone.

Although it might be hard and you might be worried about rejection or compromising the friendship, it’ll be worth it in the end. Plus, if she likes you and is anything like the 2nd type of woman, she’ll probably be relieved you made the first move. And even if she doesn’t end up liking you in that way, at least you gave it your all and can be free to move on to other women without that pesky what-if thought lingering in your head.
