The 4 Surprising Health Benefits of Being in a Relationship

4-health-benefits-relationship

My previous article discussed 4 reasons why being single is beneficial to your health, but what can being in a relationship do for you?

It’s no surprise how a happy and healthy relationship can change your state of mind for the better. You’ve finally got a partner in crime that you can do everything with and to help you deal with anything life tosses your way. Plus you get to enjoy all kinds of physical affection whenever you want. But there are also several health benefits to being in a relationship, some of which might surprise you.

Kissing Is Good for You

Did you know that in addition to being fun, kissing can help build up your immune system and improve your mood? Kissing involves swapping a lot of spit and a lot of germs, but those germs are actually boosting your immune systems. By being exposed to new germs, your body can build its immunities against illnesses. Kissing also releases oxytocin, which is a natural antidepressant.

Love Can Increase Your Life Expectancy

Happier people tend to live longer, so if you’re in a happy relationship, you’re more likely to live a longer life than a single person. A study done by Utah State University showed that a person who receives positive feedback from their partner has a higher level of self-esteem, which adds years to their life expectancy. People in a happy, committed relationship are also more likely to avoid depression and have reduced stress, both of which are conditions that can prematurely age your body.

Love Helps Your Mental Health

Being in love makes people happier and triggers the brain to release more dopamine, which stimulates feelings of optimism and patience as well as greater energy levels. You can thank the dopamine for your eagerness to try new things and your feelings of joy and contentment when you’re with your loved one.

Love Can Keep the Pounds Away

It’s true that some people gain a little weight when they begin a new relationship, but what’s also true is that being in a relationship can help you lose weight. Studies have shown that people are more likely to stick to a regular exercise routine when working out with a partner. Schedule workout sessions with your boyfriend or girlfriend and fight the fat together.
