Some people say you should never date a coworker. Others say it’s good to date someone who works in your field because it means you share something in common. Personally, I think each case is different depending on the circumstances. There are a few factors that you should take into consideration before you date someone in your workplace.

How often do you work together?

If you work with this person closely just about everyday, you will never have your own personal space. It’s always nice to come home to your significant other after a hard days work. But if you already saw them for a good portion of the day, can they really be the person you come home to to vent about your crappy work day? If you work with this person a lot and you feel like seeing them so much won’t hurt your relationship, I say go for it! But if you’re the kind of person who needs some space, this might not be the right choice.

What are your positions comparatively?

Are you considering hooking up with your boss? Might be a bad idea. You don’t want anyone thinking you got a promotion because you’re sleeping with the guy in charge. And if you’re the boss who wants to date someone you’re in charge of, it might affect you negatively as well. If you both pretty much have the same title at work and the person you’re interested in is just a coworker, things may not get as tense in and outside of work.

Are they worth it?

Is this person so amazing that you are willing to risk the consequences of dating one of your coworkers? The rules of being picky when choosing a partner apply no matter where you are. The most important thing you can do when you find yourself interested in a coworker is be smart and make sure they’re an actual catch.
