Save Yourself The Broken Heart

save-yourself-the-broken-heart

Children are charming because of their uncomplicated love of life and the endearing way that they are oblivious to social cues. Example: A little boy wants to show a little girl the worms he caught, but the girl hates worms and smashes his face with a bucket. Everyone is in tears and yet, against all odds, he may remain optimistic about the possibility of a worm-based friendship and approach her the next day. Hopefully a responsible adult is looking out and tells him to find a different, less squeamish and bucketless playtime companion.

Now imagine twenty years later when the kids have smoothed out their differences and started dating. Replace the noggin whomping with emotional distance, rudeness, resentment or any other common relationship subversion. Would the advice for the adult man be different from the little boy? Logically, to save him from nursing a perpetually broken heart, the man should let his best interest guide him to a woman who is receptive and appreciative of his personality and attention.

The Call is Coming From Inside the House
Now the million-dollar question: Are you the little boy? Do you find yourself wanting someone who does not want you? Your answer should be no, but considering how many times I’ve witnessed someone illogically pursue a person who obviously does not want them, I’m going to assume that this problem afflicts at least five people in the United States alone. You may be one of them.

The Solution
Let’s all swear to adhere to one Unbreakable Dating Rule: You don’t want a significant other unless that significant other wants you. This means:

  • Don’t pursue someone who admits not to reciprocate your feelings or whose actions reject you.
  • Don’t stay in a relationship with someone who sort of tolerates you but obviously doesn’t appreciate you.
  • Don’t put yourself in the position where you are begging a significant other to not break up with you.

Be an adult. Find someone else to play with instead of approaching the same girl every day and then crying to your worms after your face gets whomped.
